What is Coat Piece?

Coat Piece — often shortened to just Coat — is a classic South Asian trick-taking card game played by four people in two teams. It's the same game as Rung and Court Piece, with identical rules. The name "Coat Piece" is most commonly heard in diaspora communities, where generations of play have shaped its own pronunciation and table-talk.

Where the name comes from

"Coat Piece" is the diaspora-Anglicised form of "Court Piece". As the game travelled with South Asian families to the UK, North America, the Gulf, and beyond, the spelling shifted in everyday speech and writing. Today both names are used interchangeably — Court Piece in print and on Wikipedia, Coat Piece around the kitchen table.

The same goes for "Coat" on its own: "let's play a couple of Coats" usually means a Coat Piece session.

The rules in 30 seconds

• 4 players, 2 teams of 2, partners sitting opposite each other.
• Standard 52-card deck, 13 cards each.
• The caller sees the first 5 cards and declares the trump suit (the Rung).
• Play 13 tricks. Trump beats any non-trump card; otherwise the highest card of the led suit wins.
• From the 5th trick, two tricks in a row (a Double Sar) claims the shared pot of sars.
• 7+ sars wins the round (Pees, 5 points). Caller's team takes all 13: Court (10). Caller's team loses all 13: Goon Court (20).
• First team to the match target (50, 75, 100 or 120 points) wins.

Coat Piece across the diaspora

Coat Piece is one of the unifying games of the South Asian diaspora. You'll find it in:

• UK — student common rooms, Eid gatherings, post-iftar tables across London, Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester.
• Gulf states — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait — where it's a staple at weekend gatherings of South Asian expat families.
• North America — Toronto, NYC, Bay Area, Houston, Chicago — the diaspora hubs.
• Australia & New Zealand — growing communities in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland.

What started as a Subcontinent game became a diaspora ritual — the kind played at 2am after dinner when the elders are watching cricket reruns and the kids are halfway through a fourth round.

What makes Coat Piece different from other partnership games

Coat Piece sits in the same broad family as Bridge, Spades, and Whist — but the experience is its own. The 5-card trump call creates a high-stakes information game from the very first move. Partner signalling through discards turns every trick into a conversation. And the asymmetric scoring — a Court worth 10 points, a Goon Court 20 — means a single brilliant round can swing the match.

It's a game that rewards memory, discipline, and a sense of when to push for the sweep versus when to lock in the win.

Rule variants you'll hear about

• Senior Ace — a first Ace wins normally, but an Ace led right after winning with an Ace ("Ace on Ace") is demoted to a 2 or blocked.
• Double Sar — from the 5th trick, winning two tricks in a row claims the pot.
• Void Twelfth — the 12th trick earns no sar; it joins the pot and the 13th trick decides it.
• Hidden Trump — caller names trump without revealing their hand.
